But what about that toothache that crops up in Madrid? Or when youwake up groggy with a missing tooth<\/a>? Or the fact that you\u2019re on a semester abroad and just need your teeth cleaned?<\/p>\n

Well, unfortunately, there really aren\u2019t very many resources for you to access in a pinch. Obviously, you should\u00a0be sure that your travel health insurance plan provides dental insurance<\/a>. And, as always, we (shamelessly) direct you to\u00a0mPassport<\/a>, (see also ALC World at www.alchealth.com)) which helps you connect with qualified doctors and dentists all\u00a0over the world. .<\/p>\n

And if a dental emergency erupts and you have to find a dentist on your own\u00a0ask at the hospital emergency room or call a local dental society.\u00a0They should be able to steer you in a reputable direction.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re somewhere for an extended stay and would like non-emergency dental care, ask a colleague (ideally one who has nice teeth). Please don\u2019t ask the concierge \u2013 it\u2019s one thing to get a bad restaurant tip, but it\u2019s another to get a bad tip on healthcare. It might work out just fine, but you should have a more rigorous selection process\u00a0for something involving the health of your teeth.<\/p>\n

Regardless, don\u2019t forget your dental health when you\u2019re traveling. Brush frequently. It may even be\u00a0good for your brain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And then there is\u00a0dental tourism<\/a>. As with medical tourism, this fledgling \u201cindustry\u201d revolves around people traveling abroad for cheap dental care, perhaps because they don\u2019t have adequate care insurance here in the States.
